Thrifted Washboard Farmhouse Makeover

Discovering hidden gems at the local thrift shop can be a thrilling experience, especially when you uncover an item with untapped potential. Recently, I stumbled upon a rustic, vintage glass and wood washboard that was just begging to be transformed into a charming piece of farmhouse-inspired decor.

The first step in my washboard upcycling journey was to give it a thorough cleaning. I scrubbed the board in my kitchen sink using hot, soapy Dawn dishwater, and utilized a shish kabob stick to pull out the dried clothing lint that had accumulated along the sideboards. This simple cleaning process helped to reveal the true beauty of the weathered wood.

Once the washboard was clean and dry, I brushed on a coat of Rust-Oleum Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator in Gray. This product evened out the wood tone and gave it a grayish tint, creating a lovely aged appearance that perfectly suited the rustic farmhouse aesthetic I had in mind.

To further enhance the farmhouse charm of the washboard, I turned to my collection of Redesign With Prima Everyday Farmhouse decor transfers. The Rosewood Farm portion of the transfer fit the washboard beautifully, and I carefully centered and applied it to the surface using the provided rectangular stick.

As a final touch, I used Dixie Belle’s Big Mama’s Butta to condition and protect the wood. This unique blend of natural ingredients, including hemp seed oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax, helped to enhance the wood grain, soften the surface, and provide a long-lasting, water-resistant finish.

To complete the transformation, I found a divided metal container from Hobby Lobby that I wanted to attach to the bottom of the washboard. Concerned about potentially cracking the glass, I enlisted my husband’s help to carefully secure the container in place using short screws.

With the container in place, I filled it with a potted plant from the Target Bullseye Playground collection, some jute, and vintage clothespins. The end result is a charming, farmhouse-inspired piece that can be displayed on a shelf or hung on the wall, adding a touch of rustic elegance to any space.

Transforming a simple, vintage washboard into a stunning home decor piece is a testament to the power of upcycling. By embracing the natural weathering and texture of the wood, incorporating farmhouse-inspired elements, and adding personal touches, I was able to breathe new life into this forgotten laundry essential. This project not only showcases the endless creative possibilities of thrifted finds but also serves as a reminder that with a little bit of elbow grease and a lot of imagination, even the most ordinary items can be transformed into extraordinary works of art.
