Joe ‘Jellybean’ Bryant, former NBA player and father of Kobe Bryant, dies at 69

Joe ‘Jellybean’ Bryant, the father of the late NBA icon Kobe Bryant, passed away at the age of 69, leaving behind an incredible legacy that extends far beyond the basketball court. As a skilled player in his own right, Bryant’s journey from the playgrounds of Philadelphia to the professional ranks, and his subsequent impact as a coach on the international stage, is a testament to his lifelong dedication to the game he loved.

Born and raised in the City of Brotherly Love, Joe Bryant honed his skills on the concrete courts of Philadelphia, earning the nickname “Jellybean” for his smooth and versatile style of play. After starring at John Bartram High School, Bryant took his talents to nearby LaSalle University, where he continued to showcase his prowess on the hardwood.

Bryant’s skills did not go unnoticed, and in 1975, he was selected with the 14th overall pick by the Golden State Warriors in the NBA draft. Though his rights were ultimately traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, Bryant’s professional career was just beginning to take shape.

After his playing days, Bryant embarked on a coaching career that would take him all over the world. He spent time in Italy, Japan, and Thailand, sharing his knowledge of the game and helping to develop the next generation of basketball talent.

Perhaps one of Bryant’s most notable coaching stints was with the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, where he had the opportunity to coach in the same city as his son, Kobe, was playing for the Lakers. This unique father-son dynamic undoubtedly shaped the Bryant family’s enduring love for the game.

While Joe Bryant’s own playing and coaching achievements are impressive, his most enduring legacy may be the indelible mark he left on his son, Kobe. It was during the Bryant family’s time in Italy that Kobe developed a deep passion for the sport, becoming fluent in the language and honing the skills that would one day make him a global icon.

The basketball world was devastated when Kobe Bryant, along with his daughter Gianna, were tragically killed in a helicopter crash in 2020. In the wake of this tragedy, the memory of Joe Bryant’s enduring influence on his son’s life and legacy has only grown stronger.

Joe ‘Jellybean’ Bryant’s life was a testament to the power of determination, passion, and the enduring bonds of family. From the playgrounds of Philadelphia to the international stage, his journey as a player and coach has left an indelible mark on the sport of basketball. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the incredible legacy he leaves behind, one that will continue to inspire generations of basketball players and fans alike.
